Social entrepreneurship: sustainability at ÖMA

As “pioneers of the organic movement,” company founders Heide and Hermann Beer laid the foundation—driven by their conviction to create a better world—for what has become second nature at Ökologische Molkereien Allgäu: a consistent commitment to organic principles. This philosophy is reflected in every area of the company.
The United Nations has adopted 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Our actions and the measures we take at ÖMA to put sustainability into practice and continuously improve it contribute to the 17 United Nations goals.

Our implementation

Starting with the upstream value chains. Through their organic farming practices, our organic farmers protect groundwater and soil fertility. They ensure biodiversity and animal welfare. Small-scale farming structures are maintained and the cultural landscapes are preserved. Their milk is processed in regional dairies that uphold strict environmental and social standards and avoid the use of additives. Within long-standing supplier partnerships, sustainable procurement guidelines govern environmental and social practices.

Furthermore, we are mindful of our responsibility for sustainable processes at the ÖMA site in Lindenberg. We prioritise resource conservation by avoiding packaging wherever possible, reusing it where feasible, or using environmentally friendly materials. We operate in an energy-efficient manner and have converted the entire warehouse area to energy-saving LED lighting. We ensure high product safety standards and strive to minimise food waste. We source the fittings for our office premises from regional suppliers, thereby ensuring that value is retained within the region.

We also place a strong emphasis on our responsibility towards people and society. A key priority is to provide and maintain secure and fair jobs. This includes, amongst other things, sharing the profits with our staff. We are a company that provides apprenticeships and places great importance on further education and training. Flexible working hours and the option to work from home are firmly established within our workplace. We practise equal opportunities and promote a healthy work-life balance. To enable our staff to commute in an environmentally friendly way, we participate in a company bike-leasing scheme. This also has health and fitness benefits.

Maximum customer satisfaction is our top priority. We craft organic products using high-quality raw materials, applying minimal processing and avoiding unnecessary additives. Many varieties meet association standards (Bioland, Biokreis, Naturland, Demeter) – cheeses that are full of flavour and natural goodness. We provide our customers with detailed advice and transparent product information.

Last but not least, we take our social responsibility seriously. We support nature conservation projects and supply products to the local food bank. We are a supporting partner in the Alliance for Agriculture Fit for Our Grandchildren and other associations. We are proud to call ourselves ‘tree sponsors’ and ‘comforter’.
ÖMA stands for Ökologische Molkereien Allgäu – ÖMA stands for a commitment to organic principles right from the start.
